PS3: 3 Years & 8 Monthly = YLOD

Well my friends it's been a good run but my beloved Aussie first released PS3 has succumbed to the YLOD.

Could not have happened at a worse time since I'm currently home recovering from surgery for the next 7 weeks.

So what to do?

Hair dryer heat trick and if successful backup image. Then buy a new machine.

Pay someone to heat up the motherboard, no warrantee, so I can backup image. Then buy a new machine.

Pay Sony to basically replace the machine. No backup image.

A decision needs to be made and soon or I might go crazy.

Take door 1 AO, i mean if your decided to get a replacement anyway then go the cheapest route.
The only real decision is do you want to pay someone else to roll the dice for you.

Worst case scenario, you loose all your data, best case you keep it and consider that 30 mins on the internet scouring ps3 tech forums is likely to bring you up to speed to do as good a job on the mobo as the person you would pay to do the same thing.

Agree. Decision made.

Save the $100 - $165 it would have amounted to to save my save files.

Have settled on a Grand Tourismo bundle from Harvey Norman.
Once it arrives will sell the Grand Tourismo game as my son is getting the bigger pack of this anyway.

Heat up the old machine and hope for the best. If it kicks into life, data transfer to the new machine to save protected content.

I still have to get the Fallout 3 game disk out. The heat trick just might give that back to me at least.

Woot bad news for sure, but if you sell your GT5 onto another togger it means we will have more racers!

What we have decided as a family.

Initially we were just going to buy the Tourismo Bundle from Harvey Norman and sell the game, keeping the PS3 and controller.

Since then we have weighed it all up and decided to not buy one and I will not have a PS3 ever again.

Sony have a Bonus Free 3D Entertainment Pack by redemption for selective models of 3D TV's sold prior to the 31 Dec. Initially they had 21000 packs available and it currently stands at 15740 as the packs are taken up. They also promise to send the packs to everyone prior to Christmas if the documentation is received prior to 31 Nov.

Harvey Norman also have 60 Months interest free at the moment.

So we bought a new 55 inch 3D TV, plus 2 x glasses (as we have 4 in the family) and a wifi adaptor (for internet). The pack will provide me with the replacement PS3 and additional items as indicated.

So here was me thinking my 8 weeks at home would be game less when my loving wife reminded me that tucked away in the front lounge room TV cabinet is a PS2 and 40 games.

Woohoo. I have dusted it off and moved it to the back lounge for my gaming pleasure.

I have even dusted off the Nintendo 64 and the 16 game cartridges we have here as well.

I'm in heaven.

Currently playing Hitman 1 - 3. Might give Goldeneye a go as well.

Good old N64
Sold mine a few years back which I sometimes regret but was skint at the time; we had a lot of fun over the years playing Zelda and other classics.

Good call on the 3D tv, I reckon a deal like that is the only way I'll end up with one any time soon.
