Default Help on RRoD

I know there have been loads of threads about this, however as I have a PS3 i didn't take much notice & if i did, i didn't understand it.

Now, my sisters lad has just got the RRoD. She brought it off a friend and has no receipt. Can she do anything about it or is it just tough luck.

I must point out she lives in Pommie land

We talking 360 rrod mate or ps3 ylod. You confused me a little with the reference to the ps3.

Ylod fixes are temporary at best and really the only true fix is mobi replacement which can be just as expensive as buying a new machine so that tends to be the option.

RRod I think is a similar issue but can be repaired by the owner who is willing to take the 360 apart. If not they might have to search for someone who might help them.

This guide explains the fix in detail with video.

Wish her luck with it.

I thought microsoft repaired/replaced RROD consoles regardless of age, warranty etc since it's such a major issue?

As I understand MS RRoD repairs, as long as you can reasonably prove the xbox is under warranty you can get it repaired free. E74 (RRoD) error is covered by a three-year extended warranty.

Proof as I understand it for a free repair.
-You purchased the xbox within the last three years. (personally I would not tell them you bought it from a friend as they like to shaft anyone but the actual purchaser)
-The xbox is legit and not stolen or a knockoff, they check this by asking for the serial number.
-It helps if you (or the friend) have registered the xbox with MS at any stage to help with age of console verification.

My advise is to get the details..
-of when and where it was purchased.
-the first 'live' profile created on the console as this is basically proof of age and the xbox license are tied to the console through that profile.

If it is under 3 years old and you can get all this info you should have little trouble getting it repaired, otherwise you will have to pay whatever the repair fee costs, I have seen $100 and 50-60 as common repair costs for rrod.

Good luck

100% an XBOX RRoD. It's not registered as she went on the M$ site and it says it's out of warranty even though it's only about 1 year old. I've asked her to find out her friends live account and when it was activated as per you post cindax.

M$ have asked for 68 Pounds to fix it as it's out of warranty. I've told her to keep going because as Chief says it's such a major issue.

Thanks for the advise. I'll let you know how she gets on.

If the console has not been registered you may get the repair done for free. Register it and see what happens. They can only say no. Due to the PR issue it created you may just get lucky (as chief said).

The only thing I can see stopping it is if they decide that "batch" the console came from has been out of sale for too long.

Failing that, (although you may object to this on a moral level ), get your sister to trade it in on a new one. Most game stores don't check to see if the console works. Many companies such as EB, etc have a margin of "error" on this and use dead consoles as spare parts. EB for instance will still trade it in if you tell them it is faulty but will give you far less for the trade.

She's going for the sob story. Apparently it's worked for a few people. I'll let you know what happens.
