Default Game stability question

hi alls, need some advice here.

I'm currently stripping out the inside of a mountain, which involves me drilling straight down to the bedrock one vertical drop at a time. I'm noticing that I can't do more than 2 lines to the bottom before the game poos itself - regardless of whether I am running the Win32 installed version or the webby version in my browser (Opera 10.63).

Is my OS/machine spec letting me down here (Intel e6850 / 2gig ram / 3x 160Gb stripe / Gigabyte GA-G33m-DSR2, Nvidia 260_GT card), or is it a known issue with the game? I'm running XP_32.. though I'm keen to give the game a run on Ubuntu 64bit to see if this will be more stable. Could it just be that digging so hard at this speed is just spamming the server and causing the problem?

Are there any performance tweaks that I can do to stop this happening in the Win version?

The game is very buggy...

Have you tried reducing your draw distance?

What Java exception did you get?

What draw distance do you have set? It's a known problem having it set to Far.

There is more than one option for detail/optimisation levels.

I was having crashing problems too, until I fiddled with them.

Fast graphics and normal distance I think was what got my playing stable.

Experiment with more than just distance, turn them right down, then back up if they assist stability, to see where your sweet spot is.

Cheers,
Max

I'm surprised it's as stable as it is. And I'm very happy this long break in updates happened when everything works as good as it does currently
