Default Something I don't understand about us playing the alpha

Something I don't understand about us playing the alpha is that I see videos come out with more gameplay than is available to us.

If we are playing an alpha, what the heck are they playing?

Are they playing the alpha alpha (alfalfa?) and we are playing the alpha beta?

Confused.

Cheers,
Max

Historically there are various versions/game modes. Classic/Creative, Indev, Infdev, Alpha, Survival. Adventure is one planned for the future. Each development had its own quirks and special points. Alpha is the only one being developed at present.

Isn't Alpha and Survival the same thing?

Yes, and no. There was one version of MC that was called Survival.

If you're seeing videos of stuff that you do'nt get in Multiplayer alpha, then it's Singleplayer.

Yeah this. Single player has everything in the current feature set. Lots of those everythings don't work yet in multiplayer survival.

The only other differences might be that servers have mobs turned on (somewhat pointless given the lack of damage - they'd tend to get in the way more than anything, and I'm unsure if there are other related bugs as the default is to have them off), and they may be running different graphics packs thus the blocks may look different. These graphics packs are client side though. For example I use the painterly pack, but there are others out there.
