Default Proposed map restriction / trim

Further to discussions in the Map Render thread, a proposal is being made to restrict the boundaries of the map followed by an edit to trim the shaded areas indicated below. Note that this is a very rough approximation but the top left and bottom right warp points shown are intended to remain on the map.

We are aware this removes a number of warp points that have been placed by players, however this appears the best compromise based upon a limit of x blocks from spawn. Options are limited based upon the reliable plugin solutions available.

At this point it is a proposal which is based upon our understanding of the development of the map, however we obviously can't see what people may have done underground, or what they may have stored in areas that may be restricted / deleted (which they would want to retrieve first).

If any player has concerns about the proposed restriction and trim, please let myself or one of the admins know, by posting here or via pm.

Is that going to remove enough to get the size down enough though? Because while that removes the main large branch, once people start filling in the unexplored areas within the circle, will it still create the same problem?

Is this restriction for the map only or will it also delete the world and warp points outside the circle?

It enables a hard limit (i.e. X blocks from spawn) on potential map size to be implemented now before too much construction occurs on these extensions. You are right in that if we fill in the unexplored areas within the circle then we do still have the map rendering issue. Even with this restriction we need to assess the sweet spot for map updates.

The restriction will initially stop you walking or warping outside of the circle (making them effectively inaccessible), with the chunks subsequently deleted permanently.

It's obviously not preferred to delete areas that have been explored however the potential map size is significantly larger if we border these outlying spurs. We had resisted implementing hard borders till now as we were hoping to rely on players not extending the map too much, but it's simply occurring too frequently in large chunks. The map render issue is just the trigger to address the underlying map size issue.

Ok, it seems like a solution to some problems and it's fine for me if there's no other choice. It's a pity though that 10 hours of exploration of extraordinary places was for nothing, except for some nice photos.. But i guess I have no other than myself to blame

Photo's much appreciated. There's some wonderful landscape shots there which showcase the possibilities. May even come in useful for showcasing the landscape as well as constructions on our division homepage or Intro to Minecraft thread.

We appreciate your objective view of the situation.

How will you be stopped from going outside the bounds? As far as I know there is no support for this in the current engine? It used to crash if you got too high up (which I think should be fixed now) is it something similar to that?
Otherwise if people get stuck on the border and a server restart is needed like minecarts and the map chunks not loading then that could be a problem in itself.

Given this is digital, I guess it will be the firewall then?

The only investment I have in the bottom right is nam.outpost which i am in the process of gutting out of resource, so i am happy for the restriction to cut it out.

Snake has his tunnel down that way too, so he'd have to agree too!
