Default Light map to prevent spawns

Hi, veterans will probably be aware of this, but for newer players you need to have a light level above 7 to stop monsters spawning in both single player and SMP with monsters on (server 2 when the game is stable enough).

Here is the optimal torch setting to achieve this state with the minimum number of torches and relatively easy set up. The yellow boxes with 14 in them are the torches.

You just replicate this pattern over the area you have protected.
Cheers,
Cheith.

Thanks Cheith. I must warn though that the deeper you go into the ground, the less the light will prevent spawning. People have reported surrounding a spawn cage with torches deep underground but still getting mobs spawning.

Interesting. That was put in for the Halloween patch, but was supposed to have been reverted.

I wasn't aware that it had been reverted. Why would Notch do that?

It was reverted (fortunately) due to a number of issues. He will look at re-implementing it at a later date.

For me, that was what pushed me over the edge, and into playing it on peaceful. I'd light up an area, make it "safe" and still have a creeper take me down in one hit. Really took the fun out of deep mining.
