Default Some of Mojang's future plans

Notch has made a major announcement.

Quote:
We also announced our new game today! There’s not much info yet, but we’ll be getting an alpha version out as soon as we can!
Scrolls!
I figure most people reading this blog cares mostly about Minecraft development, so let me just say that I won’t be involved in the day to day development of Scrolls. Jakob, one of the guys I started Mojang with, is developing it, and has been since we started the company.
Still, I hope many of you will check it out once we’ve got some more stuff to show!
But for some people, there was far more important news:

Monday morning, I met one of my idols for breakfast, and kinda promised him I’d add pet dogs to Minecraft, so I guess that’s happening.

Some info on scrolls from Rock Paper Shotgun:

Minecraft Creators Reveal New Game: Scrolls | Rock, Paper, Shotgun

Quote:
It’s an RPS ultra-news. There’s a new game from Minecraft creators Mojang, and we can tell you what it’s called: Scrolls. We can tell you what it is: it’s a collectable card game-meets-board game. And more than that, we can tell you a great deal about it. I travelled to Mojang’s headquarters in Stockholm to meet Markus “Notch” Persson and the team behind this new project, including Jacob Porser and Carl Manneh, and below you can read our exclusive coverage. A little tease related to Minecraft itself at the end of the above article

And while Minecraft is currently a one-off purchase (although check out our forthcoming feature with Notch for rumours of some news about that)...

uhoh I'm hearing the word "microtransactions".

p.s. Scrolls doesn't do anything for me (the concept of collectable cards and stuff).

I am wondering whether Minecraft might end up being the basis for another game, which we have to buy separately. A bit like MC is Garry's Mod or the Havok Physics engine but then you have to buy games built on that platform separately.

The key thing about Scrolls is that Notch is not devoting his time to it, beyond some planning.

An extension to this:

Is the following from Twitter:

Quote:
FrankMayo1: @notch instead of making potentially tacky pet dogs, why not make wolves which are tame-able ?

Notch: @FrankMayo1 that's kinda the plan!
I am wondering if Mo's Creatures will be merged in or not. I suspect that Mojang will want IP control of it (until they release MC as open source, if ever).

Scrolls sounds a bit too close to Battleforge to be honest...

Maybe MC will become more of an API, that needs to be purchased, for all the modders to develop with.

I did read somewhere that while the core-purchase we all made for minecraft would cover updates through to the end of beta......there was discussion of the possibility of some future stuff beyond beta's end that might be chargable seperately. I read this to mean 'expansion-pack' kind of thing, though I hope they dont go all 'The Sims' on us.
