Slimes are killing the efficiency of mob towers :(
I think the squid bug (where they aren't despawned as they should) is killing all our mob spawn towers. As increasing numbers of squids spawn and never disappear the game will reach it's maximum number of simultanious spawns and stop spawning anything else. Such as mobs. In mob towers.
I would guess tamed wolves isn't helping either although I don't know if they count towards the mob total. I also don't know if neutral/friendly mobs and hostile mobs count towards the same limit, but I think they do.
Also at the same time as this happens all spelunking will be a lot safer as it's increasingly unlikely that you will find any enemies down there for the same reason.
This will be less noticable with a lot of people online. This is because I think the mob spawn limit is increased with more people, however if you're alone the squids will already have brought it way above your limit and nothing will be spawned, ever.
