The most useful part of the Nether in my opinion is that you so easily can access far away settlements in the normal world. Stuff that took 5 minutes to access from spawn by train now takes 1 minute of walking, including the actual portal transports.

Not to mention it takes a lot less room and is a lot easier to build than a rail network

But what is the point of something that doesn't involve a rail network? I am confused!!

True...

What would life be without a complicated rail network?

Just press F3 in your nether base, check what the values of x and z is. Multiply them by 8 and locate the multiplicated position in the normal world. "Below" that point is where your nether base is.

give or take a lot The Nether spawn for Survival is right next to the 0,0 gate, so if you want to go "quickly" to spawn, make a gate to the nether, make a tunnel/path to the 0,0 gate then use it. Of course, if you end up coming through the 0,0 gate, then your problem is solved very quickly.... but for the moment, it is one directional. Of course, you can just go /spawn whilst in the Nether and you will instantly transport to the Nether spawn.

I don't understand what you mean - you can ride a cart into a gate, but if you go to fast you will go through with out entering the nether?
