I think most texture packs look weird, especially the high res ones as they really exaggerate the blockiness of the game. It's not as noticeable when you have lower res textures. Also I think part of the charm of minecraft is the low res textures

But that's just me

it's funny Daed, while I agree with you, I prefer the glass and fire effects in the high res ones, so I constantly find myself changing between the misa pack and default based on my mod, the main improvemnt I like, and it might be just my eye sight is that the texture packs make it easier for me to know how much I have mined a block (you know the cracking effect)

I always have trouble with texture packs because only bits of them are good. Cutting and pasting what I like wouldn't work, so I stick with the default one. I don't have highres, so I like ones that work well with the low detail aspect of Minecraft. Misa looks good but I can't stand the animals. Too much detail for a block shape.

I do love the stave church though. That is the sort of thing I hope to make one day in a Scandinavian creative construct.

And conversely I can no longer play with the default skin - Glimmars steampunk pack all the way for me.

I am the same as Sorontar on this issue.

Some stuff is better some worse, and overall it accentuates the blockiness.

I'm utterly in love with the John Smith texture pack. I used to use the Mixa pack but I find everything just looks so much better running John Smith. Even the gamma looks better.

Part of the problem I have with ones like John Smith is that they give edges to the blocks. So you don't give a long strip of wooden planks. Instead you have a long strip of blocks of wooden planks. Also the edges of the glass look more obvious than other textures, with the glass often being covered by rods etc going across it. Good for some themes perhaps but not others.

But John Smith texture does look pretty good otherwise.

You should try the Painterly Pack, it gives you a bunch of options for each type and you pick your favorite. Then you downlod the *.zip and drop it in!
