To put you in historical perspective, the first servers were hosted by Fate. We had no fall damage and tools that never wore out. But we were all new to this and things like coloured wool didn't exist in multiplayer.
Obsi and I joined in about 5 days after the Creative world had been created. All that we saw was a road from spawn to this massive castle that Foxman had built (and later extended). We were in awe. Obsi then started her Obsidian Castle and I went for a walk to the hill where I built the pagoda and airship.
In the coming months, many others joined in, Toggers and pubbers. We had fun trying to save NAM's hill from the fire and lava that engulfed it (and the mobs who we thought kept spreading it!). We shifted the world to Exe's machines. We had to deal with our first griefer. And most importantly, we became a TOG Division.
The spawn village is built on land that was not originally flat. The east end was a hill which people had been mining under (and conducting tnt experiments around). One night a number of us decided to flatten it and lay out paths so that a village could be made. Buildings sprung up very quickly in the coming days. A few months later, we flattened the land around the town square (\warp townsquare).
Survival was added about Xmas last year.
