Apparently this will be released for Android on Thursday 29 Sept, 2011.

Looks pretty tricky to control, wouldn't survive long in survival mode. ANy idea if it was a free app, or how much?

I don't think it will have a survival mode. The various editions of Minecraft are all different games as such. That is why buying one doesn't apply to getting free copies of the others.

As to cost and avialbility, I guess we will find out in a couple of days.

The App Market currently has it listed at US$6.54, with availability limited to the XperiaPlay. I don't expect the price to change much at release.

Nothing for me, while it would be cool to have in my phone, I'd prefer to get the whole minecraft experience, not just creative mode.

All versions I can find states that they are xperia play-optimized, but the version in the video is for normal androids...

Yeah, that has been pointed out in a "review" (Minecraft Pocket Edition rolls out to non-Xperia Play Android devices -- Engadget). Mojang's blog says:

Releasing Minecraft – Pocket Edition on the Xperia Play first proved to be a good starting point for us. Lots of lessons learned about mobile gaming and the market place. We have been getting a lot of great feedback from users that now goes in to our development plans. This initial release is focusing on the creative aspects of Minecraft and making sure that the core experience works great on the phones.
Just like the PC/Mac/Linux version of Minecraft we’re planning to continue developing the Pocket Edition for a long time with frequent updates.

Downloaded and tried the free demo for a bit. Controls are a little hard to get used to, but no different than any other mobile controls really. Graphics look just like the PC, and I think it will be fun to play around with when your on the go.
