Default Finding Strongholds: Eye of Ender

Basically, in MP, it does not seem to work....

In SP, throw an eye and it slowly drifts up and away from you in the direction of the nearest stronghold. It will hover for a second, drop, and then you pick it up and throw again. More often that not you retrieve the eye.

When you throw one whilst over a strong hold it simply drops immediately to the ground.

In MP throw it and it zigzags about furiously. It is very hard to tell which direction it is going in. Somethings, if you throw multiple, they seem to go in different directions. Additionally, more often than not, the eye does NOT survive.

Even worse, first time I tried it threw ALL of the pearls that I had in the one go. For later attempts I placed a single eye at a time in my quick inventory and threw it.

So it is possible to find strongholds in MP, but it is VERY difficut and would require a very large quantity.

AdmiralTriggerH and I have so far used up 12 eyes and we have no freaking clue where the nearest strong hold is. This attempt (and the first attempt) went in very different, non-intersecting directions...

And after that you need a further 12 to start the portal to "The End" which I must admit is a very boring place. It is made entirely out of a yellow/green block and towers of obsidian. And when I spawned in Creative SP I immediately saw approximately 35 Endermen. I would suspect that in a real game you would not last very long....

Perhaps we shouldn't bother with strongholds and The End until 1.9 is finalised. I'm sure notch will continue with his feature creep through to prerelease 2131738942.

its possible to load up the seed of the server in single player, and get the coords for the stronghold.... not sure if putting them in here would be spoilers. But I love to notion of finding one and doing a server mission to check it out.

I'd love to check it out, but think before we use any method other than in game play to find it, we need to get a decision on if this world is going to remain and be updated or replaced.

If it is to be replaced, I have no problem in using any method to find it (in or our of game) - if not I expect there to be resistance to using methods other than gameplay...including spawning eyes or duplicating the world to get the co-ords.

On using the eyes/orb things - could they be acting so weird because the chunk in which the stronghold is, has yet to be loaded?

No. On the SP world I created the nearest stronghold was a LOG way from where I spawned - well outsde of the generated world. And yet the eyes led me straight to it.

If the endermen work the same in the end as in the normal world; then you can where a pumpkin on your head, and look straight at them.

But at the moment it does look a bit lame and empty. I'd still be up for a group trip though.
