Mounted skeletons have been around for a long time. They have a 1% chance of being spawned, so they are fairly rare.

yeah, they are from quite early on... back in alpha.. I've only ever seen 2 I think though

I've only seen one but he attacked me through a slit above me that was too small for the spider to get through, and as spiders always move right on top of you, it managed to position itself between me and the skeleton, resulting in the skeleton eventually killing the spider by mistake
