Yeah, apparently they were thinking about making MC free for a day, but decided that would sound like self promotion too much, so they went for the "silent" approach.

It's just sad how much power the different lobbies have in the US, especially entertainment and oil industry and such...

Mojang's announcement, quoted in full (from http://mojang.com/2012/01/17/sopa-protest-websites-shut-down/):

Quote:
SOPA Protest – Websites Shut Down by Jens Bergensten on January 17, 2012

No sane person can be for SOPA. I don’t know if we’re sane, but we are strongly, uncompromisingly against SOPA, and any similar laws. Sacrificing freedom of speech for the benefit of corporate profit is abominable and disgusting. — Notch

Tomorrow, January 18, we will close down www.minecraft.net, www.mojang.com and www.playcobalt.com in a protest against the Stop Online Piracy Act. Read more about the protest on reddit’s blog, Wikimedia Foundation, WordPress’ blog and Destructoid.
(Minecraft and Cobalt login servers will still be available.)

That is confusing, he says minecraft.net will be down but minecraft login servers will be available???

Does that mean using the downloaded client you can still login and play as normal, but you won't be able to go to the web page and play?

I believe that means that servers that require player id verification will still run, but you won't be able to visit the minecraft.net website.

It is rather confusing because there are lots of online services that Mojang provide for MC. As well as the website and the id verification, there is the client login facility and the skins database. I presume most of these are part of the Amazon hosting deal they have and that we will still be able to use them. Otherwise, everyone might have to put up with singleplayer for half a day (or however long they do it for).

Okay, Mojang.net and minecraft.net are now "down". They just have an orange screen with white writing about the protest.

The client and servers for the game seem unaffected.

Mojang.com and minecraft.net are back up if you need to access them.
