Default Help in installing Mods

Looking for some help from the community.

I have tried using my friend Google, but have not come up with any satisfactory answers.

I am running Minecraft on a Mac under OSX Lion 10.7.2 with a current Minecraft release of 1.1

My son wants to install some mods but I have not found any way to do this on the Mac or with 1.1 some of the installers I have tried have bounced my install back to 1.0.

If someone could point me in the correct direction it would be gratefully appreciated.

Cheers, Ulric

Which mods specifically?

Some mods require "mod loader", some you can just install yourself.

Normally what you do is find the minecraft.jar (I don't know where that is on a mac)... open it with something like winzip, and while that is open, go to the folder your mod is in, (which should be unzipped if it was zipped) and drag those files into the minecraft.jar file that is open.

Some mods might have you drag bits into different folders (like the mo-creatures one you need to put some files in the "mob" folder within the minecraft.jar)... those usually have a readme or some instructions that go with them... but those are also generally the ones that use modloader.

Are you only meaning client mods or server mods? I don't use client mods myself, just the Bukkit server mods. However, I believe that ModLoader is often required as an intermediary for client mods. It can be used on Macs.

So some links that might help you

Hope that helps.

Thanks Sorontar,

Currently my son is only playing single player mode so the mods will need to be client side.

I will have a go at this later and let you know how it goes.

I run minecraft on mupltiple computers, one a Mac the other a pc so I can provide instructions if you need them when I get a chance I'm planning on writing a post which has detailed instructions installing some of the mods approved for use in this division

However until then I'd suggest you check out mcpatcher which is on the minecraft forums, that allows for easy mod installation, and rollback if you stuff up. It will also let you know if a mod conflicts with another and includes the hd texture pack mod with it already.
