Default New Map format Increasing height to 256 blocks

New Minecraft Map Format, “Anvil”

Quote:
Hello!
Jon and I have been working on a new map format for Minecraft that we’ve dubbed “Anvil” (it’s just a name). The purpose of the new format is to prepare for modding, especially to allow for more block types, but also to improve other areas of the game (such as map height). The changes are:
  • Maximum build height has been increased to 256 (was 12
  • Empty sections of the world are not loaded into memory
  • Block ids have been increased to 4096 (was 256) by adding a 4 bit data layer (similar to how meta data is stored)
  • Block ordering have been changed from x/z/y to y/z/x in order to improve compression
  • Packets for sending chunks have been updated (a full 128-high chunk is smaller than the old format, and a chunk with lots of empty space is much smaller)
  • Biomes are saved per x/z column, which means they can be altered by tools
The next snapshot, and Minecraft 1.2, will automatically convert worlds to the new format. The files of the current format (“McRegion”) will remain in your save folder, if you need to restore them for some reason.

I knew they were increasing the sky height but this has ended up being much larger than I was expecting. Hopefully it will make world expansion with new terrains and biomes a lot easier.

And all the mods makers are probably excited and groaning about the possible need for them to spend a lot of time updating their mods. Bukkit especially.

But Misnik, even church spires have limits. I believe the aim is to allow people to build above the clouds once more (of course, clouds can now be turned off).

edit:

But seriously I think it will be great. I do miss playing in the clouds sometimes. also the current version makes mountain top buildings very difficult in some areas. +64 more would have been plenty. 256 (another whole 128 ) will be AWESOME!

My current work site on frontier will have 13 towers with buttresses/arches connecting some the outer ones to the inner ones. The current height of 64 was already causing me to put them way lower than I really wanted so they didn't look too horrid. This will be a big boost. though I don't expect to get near 256.

Someone has already been developing a game that involves mining asteroids and building up your spacecraft. This game is inspired by Minecraft, but completely separate.
