Default Minecraft is now officially part of Australian education

It seems that the national school grading tests (NAPLAN) in Australia today included a touch of Minecraft (Twitter)

Hm.. but which one IS punctuated correctly? I think it's the second from the top? or possibly the third from the top...

first there should be a pause after "my favourate game" I believe. Second one has no punctuation at al so it reads

my favouate game said liam is minecraft (all run together no pauses or breaks)

The fourth one is also a possibility but I think the second ones right,

The way I see it is that you can remove " said Liam " from the text and end up with only "My favourite game is Minecraft.". Obviously you don't want any punctuation in that sentence so alternative 1 and 4 would be wrong. But I'm not entirely sure if it's number 2 or 3 that is the right one (starting to lean towards 3). Personally I would have added "said Liam" to the end and be done with it

Trust the linguist. The fourth option is correct. You need the commas before and after the said Liam. It is treated the same as a complex adverbial phrase in the middle of a sentence,
e.g. The captain of the ship, after reviewing the charts, exited the room.
If you start a phrase or clause with punctuation, it must end with them.

Thankfully I'm neither in school any more nor Australian, so that will be my excuse

Though, I have to ask, why is the first comma before the " and not after? Shouldn't it be outside the main sentence together with said Liam?

Because Australia follows British English in things like this. I believe American English places the first comma after " but British places it before.

Nah, American English has it before the quotes as well. Commas and periods always get placed within the quotes and the ends of the appropriate words.
