Notch on why Steve is a guy

Notch has written on why Steve is a guy (or not) and why he never designed a female body for Minecraft.

Gender in Minecraft : The Word of Notch

Yes, there's some level of retconning there, but not much. Ever since the first animal was added, the game was supposed to be genderless.
Players are of course free to project their own ideas about gender at characters. The game is just meant to not decide for you.

Square boobs are most unbecoming!

It's pretty difficult making feminine skins with such a square body - but making a seperate model for females would not work out well, I reckon. I'll just put up with square booty ;)
It's nice to see they even considered the question, even if 'Steve' is definitely a guy. Girls sometimes get a raw deal in games (I just read a tweet from a female friend who works in the game industry, who was told that making a female character for a particular game was 'too difficult to code' What?) Some would think it doesn't matter what gender you play, but it's nice in some games to have a character you can identify with.

Wrong!
Boobs are like Pizza - even when they are bad, they are still pretty good!
