Default Possible server hosts for the division

The next step is to find a new server host for the Division. I don't have much experience with gaming server hosts, but what I would want from an Admin point-of-view are:
  • Reliable Australian host, since that is where the majority of players are
  • Command line access, so we can set up scripts and background stuff
  • Ability to run MySQL databases
  • Ability to add, delete and manage any plugin Bukkit/Forge mods
The present servers are run on a commercial machine which won't be set up like a gaming machine, but here are some basic specs to put you in the perspective:
  • World size:
    • Frontier:
      world files: 633780 K
      region files: 616840 K
      all files: 1179408 K
    • MindCrack:
      world files: 2773980 K
      region files: 947148 K
      all files: 9054892 K
  • Whitelist size: 298 players
  • Max players: 25 players (normally actually up to 20 play)
  • RAM usage: Exekewtable estimates 6-8g for our servers in total. Mindcrack runs with -Xms4096M -Xmx4096m but we have other background processes as well.
  • Bandwidth: ???? Haven't been able to gauge that, but MindCrack is much much larger than Frontier.
So any suggestions? I am anticipating that the hosting will cost at least $80 a month from looking at the high end servers, but I haven't looked especially with these specs.

You might also want to give some thought to how many cores are available. If you get something with, say 8 cores, you can then add things like -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:+CMSIncrementalPacing -XX:ParallelGCThreads=2, which can massively improve memory performance by delegating 2 cores to aggressive incremental garbage collection, freeing memory much more efficiently. It can really improve performance.

The present command for MindCrack is:
Quote:
java -Xms4096M -Xmx4096m -server -XX:+AggressiveOpts -XX:UseSSE=4 -XX:+UseFastAccessorMethods -XX:CMSFullGCsBeforeCompaction=1
-XX:+CMSParallelRemarkEnabled -XX:+UseCMSCompactAtFullCollection -XX:+UseParNewGC -XX:+DisableExplicitGC -XX:ParallelGCThreads=2 -jar mindcrack.jar nogui
Because we weren't the only ones using the cpu, we can't completely hog it at present, but we will be able to do that if we have a dedicated box at any future host.

I certainly understand that we've been sharing space and have to be considerate of others. Based on what's there, I wonder if you might consider testing -XX:+CMSIncrementalPacing in the future, if it's something you haven't already tried, but that is a nice, aggressive memory clear. It's hard to know from outside the admin forum what you have and haven't tried, so any suggestion runs the risk of being redundant.

The other issue we may run into here, with the hosting, is getting both servers up and running. We may have to pick one or the other depending on whether we go for a more gaming oriented service or a generic VPS type service.

From my initial look at these things the VPS services are typically more expensive.

The discussions tonight suggested using different hosts depending on demand, or running both from a dedicated box with multiple ports. But as with a lot of things, it may depend on the host.

Whatever we go with, I am throwing money at the screen.

I'd be happy to pitch up to 20-30$ a month

Dewey, it needs to go past the screen and be converted into bits. I suggest putting it in the DVD drive!
