Oak trees now have a 1/200 chance of dropping a Red Apple when their leaves are destroyed (including if the tree's wood is chopped). You need the red apple and gold nuggets to make the golden apple.

Why not just kill off the sheeps you have sheared while always keeping enough to breed more?

Thanks for the offer but I have quite a few stacks of wool left, however I need to carpet 7 sections of 20x20 which is 2800 wool, which equates to about 44 stacks.

So I think I'll leave it for a bit

Yeah. I just needed 2 stacks for my project and started with 4 sheep. Average of 3 wool per shearing. Can breed lambs once every 5-10 minutes. Lambs don't grow into sheep for 20 minutes. Even micromanaging the process ended up taking days to get my 2 stacks.

New features people have found in 1.1:
  • treasure chests in NPC villages
  • Melons and Pumpkins will now grow on dirt, instead of Tilled Farmland, meaning no more constantly tilling your Pumpkin/Melon farm each harvest!
  • Magma Cubes found in the Nether, now drop Magma Cream

See Full 1.1 change list and unlisted additions! - Minecraft Forum
