Default Minecraft 1.3 update coming in August?

Jens has given us a date for MC 1.3 - August 1. (https://twitter.com/jeb_/status/219828495918960641)

Quote:
Ok, the plan is to get 1.3 out on August 1, with pre-releases a week prior to that. #ValveTime
1.3 will probably include the trading with villagers, trip wires, wooden items with a full variety of woods, generated temples, emeralds, etc. It will also merge single player and multiplayer so they both have a common server and client design. This will allow single player worlds to be shared across a LAN.

The API for mods has been shifted to Minecraft 1.4 as it was judged that the server/client conversion was a major enough stepping stone towards the API that it warranted its own release.

Hopefully the 1week pre-release will be all the time the modders need... Here's hoping

The modders as asking for plenty of pre-release time. The issue is actually that Bukkit must update (1 day for untested update, 2-4 weeks for Recommended build), then the developers of the Bukkit plugins (which is what our mods actually are) need to test and fix their own plugins (1-2 weeks). This two stage process is what hopefully the API will simplify in the long term (as we won't need Bukkit hopefully).

And this is why we try and keep our plugins to a minimum and not run over a hundred of them like some people.

I imagine merging the client and server code is gonna be a right royal mess. Be prepared for a long wait I reckon.

Yes, it will be interesting how it all goes. Some people are likening it to rewriting Minecraft and feel that the end product might as well be called Minecraft 2.0. The general concept of what they want to do is easy to understand but the effort required is not clear. The mere fact that they are trying to discuss it with the modding community is exceptional but it already obvious that they will not make everyone happy.

Minecraft 1.3 Info + Snapshot w27

Mojang has given us more details about the 1.3 update.

Quote:
The time between Minecraft 1.2.5 and 1.3 has been the longest update interval yet, and that was because we changed so much in the game engine. I (jeb_) was a little scared to push it to the public, but waiting even longer is not a solution.
If you want to get the whole Minecraft 1.3 change log, I suggest you read redstonehelper’s great summary here: Planned for the next update : edstonehelper
