Minecraft as a learning tool
Minecraft has been used for classroom education and for real-world community devlopment. However, for some it can also contribute to their mental development.

Hur Minecraft lärde min 9-åriga son med Aspergers att skriva och läsa | Anna Stam

This article in Swedish tells of a 9 year old with Aspergers syndrome who always had trouble learning, especially with communicating. However, Minecraft encouraged them to improve their reading and became part of their specialised education program.

Funny note on this.... my 13 YO son has Aspergers, but hasn't had any communications problems to this level. Turns out his current science teacher plays Minecraft and mentions it every so often in class. So of course, he instantly likes her because of that. lol

He was the first one in our family to play MC, now all of us do.

My two younger boys both learned to read and write between age three and four because they were inspired to communicate online in games.

If anyone is reading that post and have trouble with some translation I can help explaining it.

You know, this is really awesome. My mom taught as a reading specialist for many years--I'll be sending this on to her. She once told me that some of her special needs kids learned to read in a different way, that it was much more of a hands-on experience (of course, it was late at night and she was making something for them to use). Maybe I can even get her to try MC. Well. Maybe. ;)

That's interesting. I had no idea you could use Minecraft in that way but it doesn't feel impossible because the game is so open and you can basically do whatever you want, so why shouldn't learning in school be a way to use Minecraft..
