Can the horses fly?
Thought not.

pretty bloody useless then unless you want to cover greater distances faster than on foot, where there are no rails and such and they will probabbl.......oh wait......

Let's see, what could they make a horse do that a pig can't
  • jump fences
  • jump holes
  • be tied to a fence
  • pull minecrarts (that have chests in them)
  • carry chests (well, maybe a donkey for that)
  • wear out (as distinct from just having to be fed to go fast)
  • cross-breed between colours
People in other forums have been arguing about whether it will make the pig-riding redundant or not. I doubt Jens will add it without making them both worth it. The Mojang game desgin generally thinks about things like this, especially if this is one of the major parts of MC 1.6.

Jens has confirmed that horses can wear armour and be tied up to a fence.

I may as well say it: I'm trying to change the idea of mob difficulty. Don't know if it'll be finished for 1.6, but I'm part done already.
One thing that I've implemented is a concept of regional difficulty. The longer you spend in one area, the harder it gets. Not balanced yet.
On one hand, this can make things much harder. On the other, it makes things much much easier. It of course scales with world difficulty.
Also by harder I don't mean +500% extra damage. They should have slightly tweaked behaviours or higher chance to have enchants/items or AI.

  • Fixes a huge security issue by not storing your password to disk.
So whilst it may not be the biggest gameplay change to ever be added, it's a big step for us
