Well, our long awaited SMP server was unveiled last night, and there were some eager people awaiting the go-ahead to jump on...
So we all spawned on or around a small sandy island (Spawn doesn't seem to be one constant spot like it is on the creative server, more a general area in which you spawn).... and ran straight for the forest like locusts.... keen to start bashing trees and begin our new mining adventure.
(apologies, I intended to take pics of the evening's happenings, but I got so caught up, I forgot until we'd completed the fortress!)
As darkness fell, we raced back to the small island, setting up torches, some hastily made swords in hand, and awaited our fate. Some chose to wander away from the pack (whether to bravely lure creepers away from the rest, or just for their own sense of dangerous fun..) Most of us survived the night.
Then we seemed to break off into 2 groups, one lot went off exploring and creating an extensive mine system, the other set to work creating Spawn Fortress. We levelled the ground, expanded the island and surrounded it with a ring of cactus (you can swim down under the cactus to get into the secure moat if you don't make it to the entrance bridge in time). The Fortress started growing up out of the sand, and then subterranean levels began to emerge below...
As the night went on, the Fortress began to be not only a place of safety from the mobs, but great community project. It underwent a few changes, as different people worked on different areas, and discussions of alternative ways to do something went on.

(Spawn Fortress!)
A grand tour, from the top down...

(Top Floor balcony {Good fishing spot! Cast towards the pumpkin-buoy})

(Top floor {Tree was later removed because people kept spawning on it)

(Main floor {Note the double ladder with helpful signage!})

(Garden level {Please help harvest and replant for making bread})

(Floor with underwater windows)

(Communal Storage room)

(Locker Room {for personal storage - rename an empty chest to claim one})
We now even have a flag!
If you're brave enough, you can climb the ladder to the top for a fantastic view!
A "sky-road" from the top floor of the Fortress, was built to assist travel to the mines, however the pesky tree-creepers (a distant cousin to the drop-bear) were still to be feared! Beware of mobs while near trees!!!!
... and finally some pretty night shots...
A big thanks to everyone involved!
