Default Dark Age of Camelot...worth a look?

Hello all. Some of you may already be aware, but I am now officially an ex-WoW player. I spent the last two and a half years consumed by WoW and played no other games. Before WoW, I used to play all sorts of games, mostly FPS, going through a game every 1-3 months.

WoW introduced me to the world of online gaming and I loved it. It was my first MMORPG. I always loved RPGs, i.e. Neverwinter Nights, Dungeon Siege, etc. Once I found out about playing online with others, I was totally hooked.

That being said, I have recently picked up LOTR. I love it so far, but know I missed out on a lot of good games over the last 2.5 years. I have heard many good things about DAoC and wanted to get your feedback on it. Could you please comment on your thoughts about DAoC, tell me if TOG has a server and guild in DAoC, etc? How does DAoC compare to WoW, Guild Wars, LOTR, etc.? I already own DAoC Platinum, but every time I would try and play it, I would only play for a day or two, then go right back to WoW. This was during the midst of my WoW addiction, so I'm sure my judgment was skewed, but now my mind is clear.

Thank you in advance for helping an ex-WoW addict find a new addiction.

I really enjoyed playing DAoC. They had neat classes and character progression. The mix of PvE and PvP seemed refreshing as well. I haven't checked it out again in quite a while, maybe a year or so. When I did I opened a trial account just to see how things were. It seemed terribly vacant coming in as a newbie character. And of course the graphics are outdated now, but for all I know they've done more engine upgrades since I last checked it out. I would have to say though that when I WAS playing and in a good guild it was a lot of fun. One of my favorites among City of Heroes/Villains, Anarchy Online, Asheron's Call 2 and now Vanguard. I also played/enjoyed WoW, Final Fantasy XI, EQ, EQ2, just not quite as much as the others.

Thanks. I was just on DAoC's website, plus ran the updater on my computer, just for fun. It had 175MB worth of updates. I see they have released even more expansions now for the game, plus did some character model updates.

If I were to pick it up again, I'd love to know what server I should choose so I could hook up where TOG has a presence, if they still do at all.

I have to admit that I tried DAoC and never enjoyed it much. For some reason I could not get into it. I play Eve all the time but prefer Fantasy adventures.

I just wish there was a Fantasy MMO as open as Eve....or if there is I have not found it yet.

Well, I got DAoC Support to give me 30 days free again, since my original trial expired last year. Even though I really am liking LOTR, I thought I'd try DAoC again, since my thinking wasn't skewed anymore, now that I had canceled WoW.

I've been trying it this last week and really cannot get into it either. It just seems like so many advancements have been made in making games more intuitive, user friendly, etc., it is hard to go backward on a game that is 5 years old.

One thing I really didn't like is how vague the Tasks and Quests descriptions were for what to do. I have like 5 quests I picked up and already cannot remember where I picked them up, nor where I'm supposed to return to once complete.

Oh well. LOTR with my new guildmates, ftw, baby!

I have 3 50's and played for a few years. I really want to play, but I feel like the ship has sailed away from me in DaoC. When I was in a big guild with even level players it was extremely fun. Even then, you needed uber gear, uber rvr skills, a dedicated buff bot and uber epics to compete in RvR. Maybe it has changed, but my feeling is, to get into the 'thick of things' it would require a guild who was very dedicated to bringing up a player.

If your a pvp'er think of WoW as slow motion daoc when it comes to fights. Until you have all your epic equipment there is a lot of one/two shotting in daoc. Fights can be over before you can grab your mouse.

There are BG's, so if you stick to them you will have a blast while you level. Unfortunately, I found good fights in BG's harder to come across than in WoW.

All in all, it is the very best MMO... err, before WoW came out..
