I think that game has had a bit of a bad name in the past and I steered well clear of it myself till recently. A few players on twcenter.net (the Total War fansite) said they were playing it and it had improved a lot. Problem is there's no trial. It's a pay £20 now and play for life so I can see how it may be difficult for them to gain players. I have found the game very original as MMO games go. Pretty much an RP game due to the fact you really are building your character up from nothing and the game is pretty hard. Not a game for a combat vet although you can become either a Barbarian warrior or Roman soldier and then fight PvP.

A lot of crafting involved. I just thought it was a pleasant change from the usual MMORPG. Graphics are acceptable and the map is huge (it's very easy to get lost). I've only just joined so am spending my time searching for food and water at the moment.


Just wondered if anyone here plays or has played it? It's had a lot of problems by the sound of it but there's a big update planned apparently.

The poor rep was well-deserved, trust me.

I haven't followed it since release, but I cannot imagine it ever rating 'decent' status. They just don't have the funding/manpower to get the job done. It was an ambitious project that stuttered from the start. (From the beginning, the whole point of the project was to prove a handful of programmers, scattered across the world, could pull off a MMORPG on a shoestring budget -- and be available as free to play.... What they were able to prove was it's DAMN HARD and time consuming. Their beta stretched into years, with an eventual pay-to-play beta that was abysmal.)

I cannot recommend it.

But, for $20 lifetime, you can't really go wrong. If the graphics are acceptable to you, and you don't mind the grind, give 'er a shot! (Just go in with very low expectations)

Well I have been playing it an understand the complaints. It is very ambitious but I find I quite enjoy it. I'm not involved in any fighting I just like the aspect of exploring, crafting etc and with any MMORPG exploring is the main thing for me. LOTRO is my main online game at the moment and quite different but I like to take a few hrs here and there playing ROMA. Of course if it was £6/turn I might not be too keen but as a one fee and lifetime subscription I have to say I like that idea

I doubt it will ever be one of the big boys in online games terms but I like that idea too. The lack of the OOC channel is sheer bliss
