gonna try and install the western version. One link from fileplanet brings up an image verification picture that says "INVALID CODE" instead of the usual verification pictures. It says if I see that my firewall or IE isn't allowing it. I've tried everything to no avail, so hopefully the download from fileplanet can be installed without that key.

try using Internet Explorer instead of firefox when getting your account set up. I had the same problem.
