Wow Mate, your in a pickle.
I generally tend to try and stay away from MMORPGS which
have not been out a year at least. This is due to bugs. Beta
testers slack, they just play normally (I should know, I have
done beta work before.).
UO was a pain to learn back in the day. I cant imagine how much they have changed stuff since I last played there 6 years ago.
I never expected much of LOTR. No magic? All melee?
I would pass.
It isn't really your age, its the mentality that designers all place the same constrictions upon their games. Which is mainly due to grinding. I blame EQ1 for this.
Old AC1 was the bomb. I keep hoping they refit it with the AC2 gfx engine. Then that will be a REALLY good game. Darktide here I come.

I'm alone now that my fiance passed on and I would love to play something just to get me out of myself and meet new friends but I'm still hunting..

My sympathies and condolences. I cant even imagine loosing my wife. I know where your coming from. I had to leave my 1st fiance. After that I couldn't play anything that we had shared time on game wise.
As for MMORPGS to try.
Eq2 isnt bad, it is grinding, but its a beautiful game if your system can run it well.
Daoc. This game still rocks, and ALL of the old expansions are available for free download. If you play though, I would recommend to play on a classic server set, as that server cluster is the only really populated one. It has a grind, but it also has a unique pvp ruleset (realm vs realm) to allow people endless slaughter of invading armies (or to invade and kill your opponents).
I played wow for a long time, but left a few months ago due to financial reasons. Have you played it since the burning crusade was released.
I have been meaning to give 9 Dragons a try.
If you wanna try free games, check out Shadowbane, its entirely free now, and not as much of a grind due to its pvp and free pk nature. Its good for a while but after having your guild cities wiped out it can be disheartening.
May your find something you like.
