Default Am I the only one thats not excited about WoW?

The game graphics remind me of a Disney movie, and I'm not convinced they have the PvP aspect all figured out yet and how it will fit into the game.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Blizzard and I'm sure it will be a good game. But theres lots of 'good' games out there now.

So what is it about WoW that sets it apart for those of you who are excited about it and/or played beta?

Maybe I'm clueless cause I haven't played it, but I'm curious to see if theres something I'm really going to miss out on

One of the things I never liked about EQ and others is while attempting to be as "realistic" as possible, everything looks blocky. They are attempting to immerse you in real life yet the trees are 2 two dimensional pictures of a tree crossed in the middle. To me, it detracts a lot from the game world. I'm also a graphics junkie, so this is a very personal preference.

However the Warcraft world has had this stylized look about it since day 1. Things have always been a little cartoony, but the depth of story and the world conflicts are what bring me in. I love the stylized graphics, but even more, I love the world. The shades of grey that the "evil side" has. Orcs were evil when their souls were controlled by the Demons, but that's been broken, so what will they do now? The Taurens are pretty Neutral, but Orcs helped them out, so they help the Orcs. The Night elves are pretty neutral, but the Humans helped them out so they help the humans. The Undead, they just want to make the world more like them, less alive.

So to me, this is like watching a trilogy in movies, then being given a chance to roam around the same world. In Star Wars Galaxies, I wouldn't really be satisfied with the game unless it looked as good as the movies. This isn't yet feasable, so I kind of stay away.

Anyway, to me it's the stylized graphics, the history/story, and of course, the Blizzard name, because we all know that means quality... late quality, but quality.

Well, I played EQ1 for a long time, and tried every MMORPG in between and went back to EQ1.

I have tried the WoW stress test and beta, and while it was entertaining, I also dislike the graphics. I do understand they are the same as WC1,2,3, but in an MMORPG I just don't think they fit. I did think the game was very polished for what it was and it passed the time for me until EQ2 was released.

Got into EQ2 yesterday and all I can say is 8O ... WoW is already deleted off my computer ...

Well to be honest, the fact I loathe PvP is another reason I could never care for WoW (PvP just seems to bring out the worst in people and is a magnet for the "I am leet, I pwned JOO!" crowd"...can't wait to get into EQ2's iPvP, where it's guild vs guild in the inner workings of the city...

Aye, PvP can bring out the worst in people. But so does farming for rare items in PvE.

Although it does add an aspect to the end game. PvE can become big timesinks, and PvP is a little reward to show off your gear/abilities.

that pretty much sums up my opinion of the game, i guess i was guilty of using it for a waystation to eq2 also. i like pvp,but i never would talk smack to someone, im content to foam at the mouth behind the monitor. lmao jk gang dont call a exorcist yet...

something about wow just kinda left me feeling empty... maybe it was because i was lvl 12 and had seen no dungeons to speak of, or pvp , and i was on the pvp server too. the quests are ok, but what do you have to do besides the quests? the quests at times made me feel like i was going to work or something. i never really felt in tune with the game, it was pretty in its sprite based way, but i feel its going to need alot more content to keep a solid fan base for anything besides its target audience.

Hey that sounds like me! I never run my mouth either! 8O

/em looks around innocently

Actualy EQ2 has totaly knocked my socks off so far.

EQ2 fixed KS'ing (you can't do it)

EQ2 fixed Camping (multiple instances) and while a zone can get crowded you can zone out and go into another instance of it.

EQ2 has INCREDIBLE graphics. The water is the most realistic unbelievable thing I have ever seen and I'm runnin on lower settings.

All in all, and I played WOW in beta as well...EQ2 is the best MMO I've seen since EQ, and I've played a few. Granted I've only been dorking with it a couple weeks and my opinion could change in a couple months, but as of right now...I concur with Twiz...the only thing WOW is to me now is hwat I mutter to myself when I start running around in EQ2

In WoW it's my impression that there's no common language between the Horde and Alliance, thus making it impossible to "talk smack" at anyone who isn't in the same faction. Chat messages in languages you don't understand get converted to incomprehensible placeholder text.

Default Different Strokes

I think what it comes down to is different strokes for different folks. I never played EQ1. AC and EQ came out at the same time, and for whatever reason, I chose AC, it was an honest toss-up as I refused to pay 2 subscription fees. Five years later I was still playing AC while also having tried everything else EXCEPT for EQ.

So now we have WoW and EQ2, and I started reading up on them. WoW I was able to get into the closed beta so that was cool, it's still not to be released until the 23rd of this month. EQ2 I finally bit the bullet and went and bought it. Got my guy up to level 6 doing every quest on the Newbee Island and such.

As in RL, the fantasy world can mirror it at times. First impressions are lasting ones. To me, TO ME, the EQ2 gameplay was.......clunky. Graphics.....ick. Sure the water is nice, the NPC's do turn to look at you, and you have voice-overs. But it didn't "grab" me. WoW hooked me, and you know when? My first Gryphon ride. Silly I know, taking a mode of transportation from one town to another on the back of a half-lion/half-eagle "thing" that flew at tree top height. All I could do was say, "Wow."

As for what to do besides quests............oh my. The crafting/professions are SO well done in my opinion. You buy your recipe's or find them as loot drops. Gather the materials or buy them from other players or NPC's. Make the item by being near the appropriate device if it's required. Simple, makes sense.

Now back to my title, different strokes. I've only touched EQ's surface. I get a month free and will use it. But it was interesting to note that my 17-year old son sat down and turned on EQ2, an hour later he turned it off to try WoW. THREE hours later he was still playing WoW. He also was "spoiled" by AC. I really think it just comes down to what you're used to and how it effects you.

Ive been in the WoW beta since stress test And have been playing EQ2 to have a break from wow till release. A tumbnail of my thoughts on the two games.
WoW Pros
Quests flow MUCH easier and fit story line better. Solo is much better in Wow havent found a point where it starts failing since I stop at 20 to play all the classes/races. Quests are not bugged and more info is given in quest to even find the mobs. Combat is fast and fun. Graphics are fine and use much less video resources than eq2. Races are more interesting and storyline is so fitting. PvP is well done. Game is very stable. Sony does not run this game(big one).
WoW Cons
DO NOT like new the death penalty, at higher levels the item decay is way too harse. Bliz is making a few too may sweeping changes at too late a stage in the game. A few too many 12 year olds running around.

EQ2 Pros
Graphics are great.
EQ2 Cons
Sony runs this game.
Combat has greater downtime.
Quests are so-so but force grouping something I detest for quests you MUST do (citizenship for example). Im 49 years and just hate being told I must do something. KSing is solved but trains abound. THose great graphics eat a LOT of video resources so 1 GiG ram and 256M video all but required. Servers are still unstable and have crashed twice on me with exptended downtime. NO real PvP.

So WoW is ahead but if the death penalty isnt modified that could change everything.

Am I the only one not excited about EQ2? Hey just playing the devils advocate. And I wasn't that exited. However I have been really enjoying WoW inspite of the look...it grows on you. The other thing I like is its simplicity and easy to learn UI. I'm still figuring out EQ2. But thats not to say that both games don't have merit. Because they do. And there in lies the crux of the biscuit! One will appeal to some where the other will appeal to others. Both games have thier glitches right now. But EQ2 is realeased WoW is in Beta. And WoW was running great in September during the first stress test.

Its kind of disheartening when running fro a goblin and his wolf. Then jumping in the water to have them beat you to the other side.

My problem is I played WoW from 7:00pm till around 12:00am. Then got on EQ until 4:00am. Man these late nights are killin me. I canceled "Planetside" in the meantime Until I build a new machine. Then theres HL2 coming out in 4 days...OMG. 8O
