Default Wish beta

The second beta for Wish kicks off on the January 1st.

I didn't play the first beta (which was about a year ago), but it looks interesting. There's supposedly lots of dynamic GM created content and servers with population limits well over 10,000. It seems to be all PvE with no PvP at all.

Might be worth a look for those who can pull themselves away from WoW and EQ2, the client (about 1.2GB) is on FilePlanet, you need to sign up on the Wish website (which seems to be down as I write this) to get a user ID.

Default Wish Beta

The server was finally up long enough to make a character and try it out for a couple of hours last night. My first impression isn't favorabe, but it's too early to make any kind of judgment.

I'm playing a dwarf named Borgis in Courik (sp?), though I may switch once I've tried out the mining and crafting.

Janissary

Update: I switched to an elf named Revic.

I took a break from Lineage2 to try WISH out - I mean I've only been waiting 6 months or so - even bought a new video card for it. I had to. Like EQ2 they don't support the NVidia card I had.

My first impression? Eh. Controls aren't terribly intuitive, there's no auto-attack that we (me and Fleuke) can find, and EVERYTHING is social. Which, as a noob, means you gather skills at dying (being dead) very quickly.

I'll try it some more - see if I can get anywhere with it. I have two chars, a human named Adolphus (with a mule named Coors) who dies a lot because he has no ranged attack - just a sword. The other is named Bodacia, an elf who does have ranged attacks (magic), but the recovery time is incredibly slow and absolutely everything interrupts the attack if you try a second one. So she uses a staff as her hand to hand weapon.

Um, she could not butcher what she killed until she purchased a knife which gave her a butchering skill. How odd.

Adolphus cannot feed his mule because he needs a sickle to harvest grain and hay. The provisioner in town doesn't sell sickles any time I've checked. I think his mule's going to be dead soon, lol.

My husband's acct has been activated as well as mine, and he gave it just long enough to go through the tutorial and said "nah." So, if anyone wants his acct, it is active. Gimme a PM. First come, first served. And possibly disappointed.

Wow, that was quick! Wonder if they found out 60k on one server was an unrealistic expectation? Hopefully they will publish why they cancelled...

It's very sad. Not because I was thrilled with the game (point and click movement is hard to love), but the world they created was very pretty and it was obviously a labor of love for it's developers.

I logged in late and didn't quite make it to Merriton before the server went down for the last time, but I got to see quite a bit of the terrain going over the mountains around the dwarven strongholds. Some of the views were breathtaking.

The only comment the devs made was that even the most optiimistic projections didn't allow a large enough subscriber base to support the game. For 68,000 players signing up, I didn't really see very many other players. My guess is that the investors took a look at how many were willing to take time away from EQ2 and WoW, and decided it wouldn't work.

So long Revic.

It was quite a shock that it folded so quickly, I don't even think most of the staff were expecting it - there was a patch just hours before the announcement.

Their official line is that they didn't think they'd get enough subscribers, which surprises me a little. Surely their target was about 50,000 (comparable to EVE online, Planetside etc), and nothing happened in the beta to suggest that they wouldn't have gotten that many players.

Technical limitations weren't apparent either. There servers seemed stable and lag free under whatever populations they had in the beta (I don't remember seeing any numbers of how many folks actually went online). There are a few conspiracy theories about the dev team being bought out by EA or that there was a falling out within the dev team. I guess we'll find out once some of the staff start talking, as usually happens after 30-odd people lose their jobs.
