Default Marvel Universe Online - Take 2

Thats right its back, after being canned back in 2007 it looks like someone tossed the IP a resurrect and its on its way again, just checkout these articles. An unkown "Gazillion" company has the rights to produce several mmo titles for Marvel, but doesn't affect single player gaming deals elsewhere.

Comics: Marvel Signs Big MMO Deal

Comics: Marvel Universe Back From The Dead

Don't forget that cryptic who was previously developing MUO ended up moving it all into champions onilne, so this will be an all new game and not based off of what was there before. It seems they're actually doing to, MUO and Super Hero Group, come on the same company (ok they have 4 studios fair enough) doing 2 same genre games? very odd.

[edit]

Another article over at Massively saying much the same. They're going to be a few years behind all these other superhero mmo's, good IP though. They'll get people to look at the game, but they'll need something special to maintain retention of subscribers instead of losing them to their older more established characters in other similar genre games.

Sounds neat. So does DC one, but really at the end of the day I don't think I'd spring to play it.

I was going to post the same... they do mention that it's aimed at the kiddies for the first iteration, so nothing for us to see, move along...

I quite like Ultimate Alliance, that's a pretty good multi. hopefully the next round of MMO for Marvel will be good for us OG's

Too many at once if you ask me. although technically some are just starting to be made now, so would qualify for the 'next generation' while a couple others will be launching shortly I expect, as part of the 2009/10 crop.

Apparently the Marvel staff will be assisting with the development of the new Marvel MMO project.

If Champions Online is any good it'll spell the death of City of Heroes.

I'm still not sure about DC Universe either. It looks like it could be fantastic but *shrug* it could also bite the big one. Either way, I can't see City of Heroes surviving Champions or DC Universe.

The hints at the possible pvp action in DC sound a lot better, and like Marvel I'm sure most would agree that DC also has more iconic figures than Champions. CoX will probably stick around for a while (after all, games like EQ, Asheron's Call and Horizons still are a number of genre "generations" later), but it'll be rough on'em no doubt.

[edit]

Expected release of Marvel Universe online at this time is 2012.

Not somethign we'll have to worry about for a while, apparently the basic game premise hasn't even been established at this point, they're just looking into possibilities.

Are pre-established iconic figures important? I mean, I'm not really sure I want to play as Superman's goto boy, which is what it liooks like they're going to make players in DC universe do, a lot. I'd be happier taking orders from some nameless hero.

I think PvP in MMOs is pointless. In every one I've played it's ~always~ min/max build crap. I play MMOs for the social factor and the co-op group content. Why spend 200 hours grinding to get the same end game uber PvP build as every other PvPer when you could just play Call of Duty or Counter Strike where you all start with the same build anyway, ergo PvP in MMOs seems pointless. Honestly, I don't know why anyone bothers with it.

I like a blend in an mmorpg, if something's too niche (all pve, all pvp, etc) I get bored. Need to branch out and be able to do all sorts of things! Did you know one of those spy games coming out has minigames buried in the code? You can go to a terminal and start playing Qbert! YAY QBERT! hahaha

Are they important? No. But the brand recognition will attract people. Thats why you know someone putting out a new star wars will have a big game. Its star wars, no matter what the launch is going to be a hot topic.
