Default What do you like and don't like about pvp mmo's

Well this might sound like a rant but i'm not making a thread to come off as one lol
I like to know for those that enjoy center based pvp mmo's what they like and what they don't like and what do developers need to do to improve the the pvp trend down the road .

I'll start what i like about pvp is that any duel or battle won't always be the same , I like the adrendaline i like the teamwork it's the unknown of who is going to win that battle and what i mostly like about pvp based mmo's is that it bring many people together and and it pushes everyone to do their best .

What i don't like about pvp mmo's is that mostly the main focus will be pvp for most of the time meaning alot of the content will be pvp focus and while i may like pvp alot i also like pve just as much and i have seen too many mmo's that are pvp based lack content with the only excpetion is dark age of camelot .

Another thing i don't like about pvp mmo's is that it brings that eltism mentality that players won't always work together or follow instructions from their group leader simply because they don't like it or got something against them .

Another thing i don't like about pvp based mmo's is the amount of trash talking and ganking i have seen on pvp servers and immature players that want to waggle their e-peen sorry if i had to be blunt )

And lastly the last thing i hate about pvp mmo's is the fact that my passion for pvp can sometimes get the better of me and that my expectations for any pvp mmo are way to high .

So in conclusion i will most likely never play any pvp mmo's where 80% of the content is pvp based , I will play any mmo that has an equal amount of content for pve'ers and pvp'ers , Cause i never had a worse experience in any mmo cept for warhammer and that game alone has totally changed my mindset on pvp and it's community and for any future based pvp mmo's .

Anyways those are my likes and dislikes , on the current genre of pvp based mmo's .

The fact that as an aussie we are immediately at a disadvantage when the server is located on the other side of the planet

I like being able to get revenge on kill/quest stealing punks. That you can usually engage in world affairs by capturing territories and building/attacking towns in many of them. I like the teamwork with friends you've grown to trust who watch each others back.

What I don't like are the cowards, gankers, and asshats who gain so many more ways to grief you. How I lose the choice on whether or not I get to do what I want in game based on the actions on any number of thousands of others who each want to do what they want instead. Thats what it is in the end, the lack of choice to play as I want.

I don't think that Warhammer had a very good structure for PVP. However, I can see tons of potential for PVP coming from that game.

Perhaps the next time we see another pvp game like warhammer or imo the better game dark age of camelot the devs will look at the pros and cons of structures pvp . Although i hate to contradict myself . Another example i have is just by looking at aion

That game is trying to tie pvp and pve with their stucture as pvpve and i have to give props to ncsoft for trying to attempt that , And the fact that aion has been around for more then a year just goes to show that there isn't a reason why a company like mythic can't make a game that has just as much as pvp and pve with both being the same focus .

I personally hope that the next time mythic tries making a new flagship to succeed DAOC and WAR that they try to to learn a few lessons from aion rather then let their egos get in the way and i don't know a company that has a more hostile ego then mythic themselves .

Aside from that i only wish that i never jumped on war last september because then i wouldidnt be so hesitant on playing any new pvp mmo's like mortal online or darkfall ,

And as for aion if there is just as much pve as there will be pvp then i may perhaps play at some point but because of what happened to war when it launched , I'm very skeptical of joining any mmo's in their launch phase and don't want to waste my time and be disapointed like i did with war .

the problem with war pvp, is you got to the end and it was pve. Enemy city raiding was the right idea, but wrong implementation. That and if you did win stuff you couldn't use it for months of pvp farming anyway, so you didn't get to enjoy the rewards of your hard labor.

Aye too true reoh , In any such case mythic had a great vision that looked good on paper for their next gen rvr game , But imo dark age of camelot is still a far better game then war to me .

Anyways i'm currently playing lotro having lots of fun with the osgiliath guard got a level 25 captain and a 9 guardian and the next big game for me is dc universe online , hehe at least there i know that pvp won't be the main focus there .

the 3 way dynamic of DAOC was great too. I'm hoping JGE will pull that off well

What I don't like is the leap of faith required to jump into an mmo. Its hype vs reality. The only real question is this, do the good points outweigh the bad in the users experience. i.e. is it fun for the user, and is this user like or not like me ?

The concept of a ratings system for games contributed to by players (not just reviewers) I like but leaves a bit to be desired. This is one that I find is ok although the weighting per category I think could use some adjustment.

How I would go about it is have the user decide the weighting for each component when they go to view the rating, and the ability to sort the ratings to the scores given by people who weight things the same as the viewer. e.g. in the following gameplay for me is worth 40% weighting, not 20, in most titles.

It should remove bias to a large extent in the results as you can recalculate based on your own weighting. You also need a Time played before rating section.

My Game Point Average Rating System (ver 1.0) | MMORPG Games & MMO News - MMOCrunch

Quote:
Rating scores much like the grade system used in most schools.
A: Exceptional, best in its class
B: Very Good
C: Acceptable
D: Decent
F: Fail (not fail, fail, epic fail. Just fail.)
How points are awarded
· 2 Full points: Exceptional Score, really nailed the category.
· 1 Full: Passing points
· ½ points :Acceptable
· 0 points :Miss
The Categories
1. Graphics: contains UI, Avatar design (including character creation, movement and animations) Rated on 0-2 points.
2. Gameplay and Mechanics: Exactly how you play the game, details your impact on the environment and the environments impact on you.: Contains Questing, grinding, leveling, character progression and any gear or weaponry acquired ingame and the basic all around fun factor. This is the biggest category and most important to pass in. Rated on 0-2 points.
3. Community: The other people you will be playing with, simplest yet important category; this is only for MMO’s and multiplayer games. Rated on 0-2 points.
4. Customer Service: Self explanatory means if you have a problem how is the company going to handle it. Rated on 0-2 points.
5. Cost and Accessibility: How do you acquire the game, ease of installation/uninstallation and down-loadable or not. Whether a box is involved, how easy/hard it is to find the software and how much it’ll cost you. Also any and all item shop ratings go here too, rated on cost effectiveness of the item shop and the currency conversion. Example: for $10 you get 10 doodads and it cost $1.00 per doodad for a thingamabob; not cost effective. I will also rate a monthly subscription based on price. Rated on 0-2 points.
Example:
“New MMO on the Block” by mmoware.com
Graphics: 1
Gameplay: 1
Community: 2
Customer Service: 1
C & A: 2 (it was a free download that worked and the game had no item shop, not realistic but hey, you never know)
Calculated points: 7
GPA or Game Point Average: B- (not a percentage score!)
Thats what I dont like about all mmos, too much guesswork before you part with your hard-earned.

Currently I have Aion at 7.5, I rarely rate anything less than 4 or more than 7 using this sort of system. No it isn't perfect. And my recent experience is limited. And yes I am the enthusiastic type.

The fact the community I mix with is TOG and that NCSoft publish it creates a bias of about 1.5 points up.

Its funny you mention that Mem, because I was looking at developing a games rating scale for review articles that would be more robust than the typical. It would be pretty rare to get a really high score, with good games typically falling more in the "Credit" range of a university scale.
