Default Similar to Ultima Odyssey/Darkfall/Mortal Online

Hi Everyone

Bit of a weird thread, I have been having a google and look at many different forums but also just wondered if anyone knew off the top of their head, if they knew of a game that may be similar to the cancelled Ultima Odyssey.

I have been trying games such as Darkfall and was thinking about Mortal Online, but also just wondered if there is anything else that might be good to look at.
Played WOW for years and have not been back for years (as I have recently found out an old account unused for 2 years has been hacked and most of my characters gone) and have been having a look at what Core Blaze might have to offer.

I am thinking of looking at Purpetuum but wondered if anyone knew of something that may have been similar to Ultima Odyssey?

I actually had an email (not sure if it was legit or not) from blizzard saying ive been trying to sell my old wow account the other day and that it will be permanantly banned if i didnt contact them. Since i never will go back i always reply in the same way with "Get" followed by a 6 letter word The amount of battlenet spam ive had this xmas has superceeded any ive ever had before. There must be so much money in wow accounts these days its hardly worth having one for fear of hackers, unless you change your password every day. Im glad i dont play anymore.

Back to your question though, i was looking forward to ultima odyssey many many moons ago and was disapointed when it got axed. As this was fairly early in my online gaming history (Ultima Online being my first) it was the first time i was subjected to a failed project.

I dont remember to much about it apart from i think it was the first game to have instances. It reminds me of guild wars a little as when you leave the towns you have your own private world. You might want to try that or wait for Guild Wars 2 which i believe is soon to be released.

Personally ive tried alot of fantasy MMO's and nothing comes close to the fun of WOW, shame the community really really sucked and drove me away for good. Alot of the free ones are ok but never really held my interest for long. One ive had my eye on is TERA, now this game looks fantastic. Its not released yet so i couldnt tell you any more then just take a look at the thread or official website.

Its a little while off yet though so if your wanting to play something right now you probably wont want to wait the 4+ months for its release. Normally all the best and most popular MMOs are here on TOG. I know you prefere fantasy MMOs (i was the same) but if your looking to join a game with a massive TOG backing then you may want to wait for Starwars TOR, that game is going to be the biggest release since WOW.

There are alot of MMOs out there at the moment but to be fair im quite fussy and IMO there arent many good enough to hold my interest at the moment.

Cheers Xavien, I was the same and started off with Ultima Online and then onto WOW, I tried Guild Wars for a bit but found I didn't have enough control of my character, then with WOW I was there for years and really kept trying but yeah the community really got to me in the end.

Then I tried City of Heroes/Villians and enjoyed that for a bit but still felt didnt have enough control of my character, then onto Daggerfall, I loved being able to have the control and create all your gear funny thing was, no matter how much you worked you got owned at almost every turn.
Tera looks good and so does Starwars, in the end I went across to SP and MP games such as Mount and Blade Warband, GTA and Battlefield Bad Company etc
Im quite fussy too hehe and just want to make sure I get stuck into a good one, I guess I always have a soft spot for Ultima (Hence part of my username) so was very keen for Odyssey or for something similar. Odyssey had it setup I think with attacking with the left mouse button and block with the right.
I'm not sure, but was even thinking about looking at Mortal Online.

I guess it comes down to whats most important for me in a MMO but like you I'm quite fussy.

You make that sound like a bad thing?

Mortal Online is an excellent game, with more potential (I believe) than any other game out there. The biggest issue is the size of their Dev team, being a small indie developer, although gettiing out a pretty major patch at least once a month is quite impressive whoever you are. There have been prior problems with patches, but those were due to the third party software they were using, and it appears to have been resolved now.

If you liked Ultima Online, then I would hazard a suggestion that you would also like Mortal Online, as the devs have openly stated that they all loved, and have based many systems on, pre-trammel UO. Just look at the PvP/flagging system etc.

MO has gotten a lot of bad press over the last few months, much of it I feel is unfounded, and lots of it started by a small handful of folk who seem to have taken it on themselves to bring down MO. They are the same guys who troll the MO forum, post all sorts of hate on the MMORPG.com forum, post hate messages to any youtube videos etc. I would say, ignore the anti-hype, the game is great and getting better almost daily. Population is starting to increase again, and new content is going in regularly.

However, I cannot say with any certainty that you would like MO. It is, after all, a niche game. It is brutal, there isn't *much* help to get you started, and there is the constant risk of losing everything. The population isn't massive, but seems reasonably healthy now, although a lot of older players are currently taking a break until more content goes in. I am hoping they will return with all the great things planned early this year.

A a good parody of the business model SV are adopting is that used by EvE. EvE struggled on launch, had a small but committed fanbase, didn't really hype or market their game but just grew steadily. Now, thave have a solid 50k players online at a time, and a great, well established community. MO will get there, it just needs time

So, if you are considering MO, certainly consider giving it a try (there is currently a special offer on digital download copies, with a 14 day buddy key added). If you do, give me a shout and I will try my best to help you get started!

Thanks Flint, hehe I guess I am a bit skeptical as I was playing Darkfall for quite sometime and enjoyed it, however after feeling like I had grinded quite a bit and thought I could at least defend myself, I was constantly rolled or would end up in some big lag spike so next thing I knew I was back at the spawn point. Im more than happy to get stuck in and grind as everything needs time and effort to get somewhere. I just want to be careful that I do not put in too much time again.

I loved UO and found even with the PVP i had some sort of safety hehe I used hide and my knowledge of the maps for little hidy holes.

I might give it a trial go for a couple of months soon then and see how we go.
