I'd say jump down into the Div and ask the guys there. I've played Eve on and off for a number of years and I think it is mechanically the best MMO there is. Unfortunately it always ends up feeling a bit like a job for me and I get tired of it.
It's great as a casual friendly game, with offline skill training, and if you like PvP there are immense opportunities for that. If you don't then you can typically avoid it quite safely by sticking to controlled space and just doing your thing. You're never completely safe though, when you're in space. People can and will suicide gank you. Sometimes for what you're carrying. Sometimes for shits and giggles.
You can really get out of it what you want. I just tend to overdo it when I play and burn out. There is a lot of content, so you aren't likely to get bored in a hurry.
The single best piece of advice I would give to a new EVE player (or player of any sandbox game really) is set yourself goals to work towards. Short term and long term so you get the satisfaction of checking goals off on your way to your over-all goal. Helps maintain focus and interest, otherwise sandbox games can sometimes get a bit aimless and wandery...
