i did take a few more screens, but this industrious lad seems to have found the better way to display what the game was offering at this point...

I was accepted into Beta a while back but never tried it, a friend of mine was raving about it today so I am installing now and will be on this weekend Beta test to see what all the fuss is about. I thought it was turn based fighting but apparently not.

Is this an Instance world or a seamless open world like WOW?

more like large instanced zones, where it is more open-world within. much more like WoW than, for example Neverwinter. it is not a single-shard technology at work...there are many different physical servers to choose from, so i'm not sure the zones are even "instanced" in the same way we've begun to think of them. but it is not seamless in the purest sense either. you will find the same blue-dotted boundaries as you would find in many FF games. some of these zones are quite large. however, there are some individual instanced boss/story battles as well.

no reason not to have a look if you've been invited, and phase 4 (next month, i believe) will be an open-beta regardless.

here is the schedule for the weekend...48 hours only.
June 21, 2013 (Friday), 2:00 a.m. to June 23, 2013 (Sunday), 2:00 a.m. (PDT)
June 21, 2013 (Friday), 9:00 a.m. to June 23, 2013 (Sunday), 9:00 a.m. (GMT)
June 21, 2013 (Friday), 7:00 p.m. to June 23, 2013 (Sunday), 7:00 p.m. (AEST)

I've dabbled in the beta (on the PC naturally) and have to say it's much improved. However given it will be on the PS4 (E3 2013: Final Fantasy XIV Online Also Coming to PlayStation 4 - IGN) I may holdout and see if they do a good console port. I would like a nice visual mmo to play on the couch with a controller

most of the console porting bits have already been done, and i've had a go with an X-Box controller (the scheme for the PS is roughly the same, of course)...i find the PC controls more intuitive (i use a Logitech G13 and G600), but i must admit Square-Enix has done about as good a job as possible making a console controller comfortable enough to use...with practise.

an interesting developer commentary is available:

In my case, it was because I had bought the original game. They are currently in phase 3. Phase 4 beta will be an open beta.

I will be playing this as well. Bought the original version for PC and picked up the PS3 collector's to support them for doing so much.
