Default DDO Billing info , bad news for aussies :(

http://www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18554

I have been following the progress on DDO for quite a while now. As it is nearing release I've been trying to get information regarding server selection and bill details.

The post above has been answered by Samera, a Turbine rep. The game will have

Localised Servers
Localised Billing

What this means for us is that we will not be able to group up with any of guild mates internationally. While this is already the case for WoW with respect to Euro/Us severs, us Aussies still have no idea which servers we will be playing on for DDO.

Far worse is loclised billing. What this means is that even if I was to pre-order/order the US version of the game, I still couldn't play on US servers since they required US credit card details.

Turbine have already done this in the past for AC2 and I'm sad to say they have done so again ...

Excuse my MMO ignorance

Does that mean we have to have an Australian only guild ?? , with no interaction with any other parties around the world ??

Cheers

In short, yes.

Localised billing means that we are paying the subscription to the game in your local currency. Of course this is a boon because we are not at the mercy of international currency rates.

Localised billing generally means you are forced to select a small sub-set of servers where you can play on. From the look of the response it seems that Australia gets a localised set of servers somewhere and the US gets theirs, the Euro's gets theirs too.

TOG being the international community it is, we get a chance to play with people all over the world.

In Everquest II, Lineage II, Eve Online, Star Wars Galaxies and City of Heroes, we can log in and given our population in the game be pretty assured that we'll find another TOG'er online at any one time. If you're a shift worker and you don't get to play with the people in your local timezone, then you log in and play with others in another timezone.

World of Warcraft is slightly different because we've got 2 communities. The European community and the US/Au community. I can log in during my evening on a weeknight and play with the Aussies who are also online. On a weekend, I could log in at lunchtime and play with our American members as its their evening. Basically in the US/Au WoW community, there is almost ALWAYS a TOG presence in our servers of choice.

Localising the servers will prevent the Aussies from playing with the Americans, the Americans to play with the Europeans. We will become, in essence, disparate and separate TOG communities within those localised servers.

I'm not going to even contemplate getting DDO now - I think I'll stick with WoW.

Yeh .... I remember that all too painfully. I ordered 4 copies of AC2 for myself and some mates, and we were screwed over until they let Aussies into the servers. The most annoying thing was that they didn't announce they were going to do it until the day prior to release, so those of us who were prepared had it already.

Score one more for Ken Troop and Turbine.

GRRRRRR!!!!

EDIT: I'm with Derolict on this one ... DDO is a non-starter for me.

Yes, Lichbane which is why I have been pressing them for an answer on this. Localised servers would mean that we would only be able to play on Aussie servers. I personally do not believe there will ever be Aussie servers and fully expect The US servers to be our 'home'.

I will still get the game. I do recall Turbine mentioning that they were looking at alternatives to Credit Card subscription but I guess we will have to wait and see.

If that is the case, I'm thinking we should open a ddo forum at least we can consolidate the issues and the people who are interested.

It's generally the case here in TOG that a game is published and has a following before a dedicated forum is created, we are discussing these topics in the Private "The Troll Cave" which is in the TOG Strategy, RPG and Other Games section.

Cheers & cya in there
