Question Best Crafter's MMORPG ?

Despite all its fallacies, I must admit SWG has the best crafting game aspect of all the numerous mmorpgs i've played.

2nd has to be either Anarchy Online or Rhyzom with WoW a third. Fourth would be DAoC since they sorta nerfed the craft side with reducing the crafting incomes.

So any other games that will be suitable for an online crafter like me ?

I seek an MMORPG with good crafting options.

Anyone ?

Horizons was meant to be pretty good for crafting, though apparently the game otherwise sucked. I think they offer a free trial. EQ2 was also apparently pretty good, but they're making some significant changes to it at the moment. EVE also has crafting of a sort, though I think the focus is more on trading.

If you're really into crafting try A Tale In The Desert - crafting is pretty much all there is, but it's incredibly detailed.

I think Everquest 2 has a quite nice crafting system. Quality is determined by skill and actions in the crafting process itself though and not from the raw resources as in SWG, so it is more time consuming to create a finished product. Rare resources will also allow you to make some rare/better items.

And crafting has its own leveling and classes, separate from the adventuring levels and classes. You can level both, or focus on one of them. Although if you want to gather resources yourself, you will want to level the adventuring side also.

As far as the new ones coming out, Auto Assualt has a detailed crafting side. The resources come from the environment and they must be refined to be used. You then use them to fix "broken" loot or to experiment with to make the loot better. Reminds me of the SWG crafting but without having to survey for material.

They are basically merging the multiple crafting steps for many items into one step. The crafting process itself is still there with its skills and leveling and there are still common and rare resources to make items from. And you still need the same amount of raw material, you just provide it all at once. At least that is my understanding of it.

While I will miss the multilayered approach (assuming it goes away entirely), I think overall the changes will probably be for the better. It seems they are trying to cut down on the tedious parts, while still trying not making it too simple to become boring.
My Sage has to go through 10 crafting steps to make one spell scroll from scratch if he has all the raw materials. While it is not bad in the beginning (leveling is fast and you basically gain xp on everything you make), it can get a bit tedious later.

ATITD is quite different from the rest of the MMOGs and definitely worth a look if one is really into crafting and trading and do not care much for killing mobs. It is about developing a society and a civilisation. Played in the first version a long time ago, but decided I liked killing mobs in addition to crafting and trading and moved on. But it is a pretty cool concept.

SWG crafting is somewhat dead atm. The system is still nearly the same, but changes to the game have made the need for well crafted items go away. Also, there are very few items in SWG that can be crafted that are better than loot drops. Thus, killing the economy and driving many of the best long time crafters away. The real world feel of the economy was what I loved about the game. They needed us and we needed them.

Sorry about that.

Horizons was a crafting engine turned into a MMORPG. If they put as much work into the adventuring/questing/content as they did into crafting, that game would have left all other for dead.

But they didn't. I hear it's now a game entirely populated by crafters.

But it does get old quickly. I swear, when playing the game in the early days, everyone was crafting during work nights and would go adventuring during weekends. And the crafting had your attention so focused on what you were doing that you felt like you were working a second job.

Hmmm ... BACK AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER AND RETHINK!

Time to cancel THAT account.
