Some interesting figures and charts - no real surprises where WoW is concerned:

The chart comparing genres was an eye-opener. I wonder why fantasy is so popular compared to other genres?

a) Nearly every significant mmorpg has been a fantasy based game, excepting Anarchy and EVE.

b) They didn't make World of Starcraft (psst Blizzard, bloody make it!)

The game he picked as best of E3 - Tabula Rasa looks great - sci-fi RPG with a FPS type feel in a battlefield setting. Shared battlefields with instanced missions that can affect the battlefield.

Not much information around on this game yet, but I am eagerly awaiting more information and the game.

Yeah I'm amazed as well that Blizzard hasn't made World of Starcraft yet, seeing as it was much more popular than the Warcraft games, or so I understand?

Nice to see that Ultima Online is keeping it's head above the water after all these years and despite all the competition.

I'm surprised at RuneScape's numbers. Shows that you don't need flashy graphics to build a loyal community.

Those charts are always interesting. This site is also intriguing:

I was thinking a bit about the genres and realized the the majority of of the MMOs I have played for at least a few months have not been fantasy based. In fact, my first 4 MMOs where all SciFi-themed (Anarchy Online, Earth&Beyond, SWG, EVE). Fantasy-based ones are only 3 (FFXI, EQ2, WoW) and then there is CoV who is neither.

To how many is the genre an important factor? I can't say that it has been a conscious choice for me. Neither has licensed themes like Star Wars in SWG been a major factor.

Genre is important to me but not a make-or-break factor. I started playing D&D in 1978 when I was in grad school so I'm really burnt out on fantasy settings. But the sci-fi games have generally done me wrong (AO & SWG) or aren't appealing in some other way (I want to be a character not a spaceship). Planetside is the only MMO I'm playing now, I guess that qualifies as sci-fi.

Kinda funny about the World of Starcraft mentioned in here. There was a spoof report of one opening, yet it very well may be a spoof that ends up turning true. http://www.gamespot.com/news/show_bl..._&subj=6152718
