What's happening with Dark&Light?

I had followed Dark & Light (http://www.darkandlight.net/) for a couple of years until I lost interest with the Settlers fiasco back around December '05. I just remembered about the game but hadn't seen notice of the final release on any of the major gaming sites (mmorpg.com, gamespy.com etc).

It seems they opened the game for download sales only a couple of months ago, then suspended any monthy payment for 90 days since the game was in beta still and were only charging for the client. They were losing their community pretty quick with frustration, I guess.

I had always been intrigued by what was shaping up to be a very novel take on the MMO game - open character development, exploration heavy game . . . so the question is: anyone been in the game or also following it? it is even worth the $39.95 initial download?

Thanks Karma, that was an interesting read and sums up pretty much how I am feeling about the game just looking in from the outside. Give it a year and it if is still rolling, but might be worth it . . . but with LOTRO, Conan, Darkfall etc coming out . . . hmm
