Yeah - I like RPGs - and I think he does too, but I can relate to the "Oh no, not another friggin bunch of rat killing" feeling.

that's a decent article. it's true, the whole grinding system is a gigantic timesuck, but I kinda disagree about the concept of needing to grow in strength.

one of my fave games of all time, Jedi Knight (the whole series) does just that to great effect. you start out as a noob with a blaster, and work your way up through jedi powers. I think there's been no better feeling in gaming than gaining a new level of force push or force drain, etc. it really feels as if you've graduated a level into a whole new world of possibilities.

with RPGs, gaining a level just allows you to go fight monsters that are one level higher. really, it's just allowing you to keep pace.

Sometimes, we forget that "games" don't always mean computer games. TOGgers will certainly know about this because even as we started with consoles from Atari, etc., we also spent a lot of time playing board games, with a few even playing RPGs (by that, I mean paper and pencil). And given possible problems involving peak oil, etc., perhaps we might find ourselves going back to that.

I think those that can focus thier minds on the "fantasy" aspect of RPG's have the ability to forget the"time" it takes to play. Which strikes me as funny. I just recently joined this site as it caters to us "older" folks. Folks possibly with many other things on thier plates that do not lend well to very involved games like RPG's. And the author of the article seems to have hit that barrier of Return on Investment. He sounded like he needs to maximize the time has has actually doing something great in game as opposed to developing into something great. Well for my tastes, I enjoy the development of new characters. I sometimes power through new characters for specific reasons, but I also make sure my main characters are played as intended. I think being in the business has jaded him.

I understand how the monotony of killing the same set of low level monsters can take you away from the fantasy aspect of the game. This is usually not the case in well paced games. When you sit back and realize the amount of hours gone by, it can seem wastefull. However, the new areas, items, etc that can now be acessed are usually always worth it.

really, it's an excuse for real content, isn't it? if there really were tons of captivating quests and action to be had, we wouldn't need to grind... but somewhere along the way, it became acceptable as something people need to go through in order to show that they're serious about 'wasting time' in a MMOG.
