Default Family Board Games

Earlier this year i realised that my daughters (7 and 11) and wife were all in seperate rooms, on ipods, internet, facebook, andriod tablets and we hardly ever spent time together. So i researched family games, watched plenty of youtube videos, then ordered a bunch of boardgames.

These are the ones i bought in the last few months...

It was a bit of an investment, but now my family has had some great nights around the gaming table. Spending that time together is priceless

I chose these games because each is unique and varying skill levels.

My 7 year old is able to play and be very competitive in Dixit, Talisman, Small World, Pandemic, Dominion and Blood Bowl. In our first game of Talisman she flogged the rest of us.

A few of the games like Mage Knight, Netrunner and Power Grid are for when my kids want to try out more advanced games.

Awesome. Well done.
I regularly do gaming nights with the wife and friends and it is a great time. We get their kids involved too.

Talisman is awesome!

I tried Talisman for the first time at an all day gaming group - really didnt care for it. Went on way too long (we eventually called it off about about 3 hours).

And I think during that time I had 3 fights. One of which was against a snake. Which I lost.

When I'm looking up games now, anything more than 2.5 hours playtime really puts me off. It seems (and this is from someone who has only discovered board games recently) that the older, longer games (like Talisman, Risk for example) can be replaced by more modern games that get to the point a lot quicker.

Good on ya for getting the family off the computers and into something more social.

Yes Talisman can drag if the group is too large. Four players work well. I also encourage the next player to start rolling their movement while the previous player is still resolving their combat to keep the game moving quickly. An extra dice or two is useful.

For a lightweight war game which is very interactive and can be over in less than an hour i recommend Small World.

Yeah the Tabletop episodes are great. I especially liked the Hang Out with Wil Wheaton episode where he talks about why board games mean so much to him. Picked up some games after watching Tabletop, and also the Dice Tower reviews and playthroughs.

Formula D looks good if you have an enthusiastic group. The back story they gave each character was pretty funny.

I wouldn't mind setting up a board game that we can play on the TOG forum with a turn each day.

Nice!
How's Battlestar Galactica? I've looked at that for a while.

Very cool! We try to do it every week with our family as well. The old classic Sorry is still a favorite with the youngest ones, two and six. If the older boys are interested, we go for RISK or Scattergories.
