Default MUD's

Who grew up on these? Are they considered Retro?

I started back in 94. Biggest mistake I ever made.

I ended up running my own mud from 98 to 2004. Coded
probably 20 megs by myself into a Diku. SoulMUD. Didnt
even know how to when I started. But I hated to see it die,
and so I took it up and spent more hours then I could count
into making it one of the best Diku systems I ever played
(or non-diku systems for that matter).

I'd still have it up now but I dont have a place to host it.

Gosh I miss that place. I miss coding.

Heh, I have now and then participated in a few MUDs and MUCKS, mianly furry ones but yeah, I know how time consuming they can be.

Yah mate, I got hooked on MUDs back in college. I'd done the BBS scene, but this was real time!! Loved it, wound up imming, then coding for the ROT mud (Diki->ROM->ROT), then started up our own when Vengeance stopped writing code.

I really enjoyed it, and my best buddy from there came down to visit the wife and I and wound up moving to my city. His kiddo is my god daughter now and we still stay in touch loads, been 11 years since then.

Spectre,

Think Wow & EQ without the graphics, just everything in text,
even the commands. Actually MUD's spawned the entire
MMORPG industry. Command based.

Sec, I'll link the old web page for giggles.

Ahh, found it, SoulMUD.org Age of Life

I keep it stashed away on verizon should I ever manage to
find a server to open it up again on.

Yah, MUDs are probably the main step things took between Legend of the Red Dragon, Trade Wars, and that sort of stuff we ran on BBSes and Ultima Online. UO was the main one to drag us out of text outside some sleepers.

And MUDs from the BBS games were a huge jump...turned based vs. real time.

I fondly remeber Legend of the Red dragon on BBS's.

A few turns per day, just a few each day...

UO is probably the least mud like MMORPG out there.
