Could also have been an Ultima... or even Aklabeth (aka "Ultima 0")

I notice you say "proper"

Does that mean you don't count the recent(ish) Bard's Tale game, for PC and consoles?
From what I understand, it's a very different style of game to the originals.

Yep, that game was entertaining, but was wildly different in its style. Games like Wizardy had some great updates and evolved somewhat. The recent Bards Tale game had nothing at all in common with the original games, bar loosely the setting. Give me dungeon crawling with a party!

Heh, BT was one of the greats! I still fire it up on the Atari ST Emulator from time to time. There is a brilliant place for XP in one of the mid - high level castles where there are 4 groups of 99 berserkers or something. You tackle them with a couple of Sorcerors in your team and use mind blast or mind burn or something that hits all groups.

I remember as well, the first time I went into that castle (you had to be pretty tough to get in, it was guarded by statues of giants and dragons that squished you quick if you were weenie) I had only moved about 4 steps in the castle before I encountered a dragon that wanted to join me. I was so stoked!

Ahhh lots of great memories.

Have lots of memories of BARDS TALE... my (then) best friend and I used to play these games together... it was such a blast. A shame most of the games like this (or is it that I am older and the innocense and having fun has been ripped out of my life?)

I loved Bard's Tale. I also played almost all of the King's Quest games. Fun!
