My first official hand held would have been a orange football game... two player. You were just a line that moved around. Only like 5 "figures" on each side.
But my first gaming console that was hand held actually isn't retro as it was the PSP.

Hehe, ive still got it here, Ill go take a photo...
Its a car racing game, with a wheel that you turn and dodge the cars that roll down towards you. EDIT: Heres a youtube video of someone playing the same game  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31O-IUbZpIE Heres a pic of mine, I remember I took it to grade 5 camp in 1979, it is stamped on the back 1978 production date and its made by TOMY. Oh and yes, that is my name my old man scratched into it, so no-one else would steal it, hmm, wasnt happy about that either...

First hand held was a calculator.
Numbers would scroll across and you had to add the the balance to that number to make 10 for that number to disappear. There was also a boxing calculator that had low/high punch and sway. Great calculators, found out later that they can add, subtract and multiply. Dam

It was either Merlin or a small LCD game called Fire where you had to bounce little stick men dropping from a burning building into an ambulance.
My first console was an original Atari 2600. My mother bought one for my brother and I before they were even advertised. Our first game on it .... Space Invaders! Tardaan

Mine was Donkey Kong Jr. The double screen fold out. Later on I got Iron Sword. But My favorite ever, was the Super Mario Bros. 3 game watch. I still have it and wear it on especially nerdy occasions, though it will drain a battery in a day and a half now.
