I couldn't choose between Elite and System Shock 2 even if you put a gun to my head. Deus Ex gets an honourable mention as well, along with some arcade classics like Defender, Gyruss and Space Invaders.

I played a lot of Digger when I was younger. Simple but addictive game. Command & Conquer took up a lot of my time too.

Definately Mario Cart, I can't count the hours spent in battle mode or time trial (fierce competition back then within my circle of friends)
I still get all goey inside when I here the opening theme for Super Metroid.
On PC Tie fighter ranks high, was a HUGE fan of Shogun: Total war, but the civilisation series beats allcomers, my no1 fav game of all time (1 through to 4)

FPS-DOOM Golden-eye runner up
RPG-Zelda Ocarina of time
Driving NON SIM - Mario Kart SNES (No better)
Driving sim - Gran Turismo series (they get better each time)
Sandbox - grand theft auto vice city
2-d puzzle - Super Mario Bros
3-d puzzle - Super Mario 64
