Game closest to Elite

There have been many games trying to improve on the classic game Elite but none have been really successful. One thing that space trading/fighting games seem to forget is to keep things simple especially the trading part , the more complex you make the interface the more clunky it tends to be.

I came across a game Darkstar one which did this, camp storyline but most are these days. The trading was easy and simple but you only had one ship that you could upgrade when you collect crystals.
I had not played Elite in eons but I enjoyed Darkstar one, maybe developers should take note and develop a game that can stand out from the shadow of Elite.

The closest I have found to Elite was Freelancer or Wing Commander Privateer and those games are now quite old themselves. I loved Elite and Elite 2, would love to see a well done modern take. I tried Eve Online but it didn't do it for me at all.

X3 is a fairly reasonable game. Steep learning curve, but sandbox universe with storylines available.
