Best 2D platformer

Couldn't find a thread on this topic by searching, so I thought I'd better make one. Love the genre myself, and I'd love a few recommendations. I know there are threads online, but I've mostly been disappointed by the games I find there that I haven't already played.

My own top picks would be, in order.

Castlevania: SoTN (psx)
Super Mario World (snes)
Cave Story (PC freeware - go get it!)
Odyssey (amiga)
Exile (amiga)

Both the Lost Viking games were pretty good examples of the "puzzle" platformer.

Also the earlier sonic games get overlooked but they are very good.

Donkey Kong (snes)

Golden Eye (N64)

Classic games! love it

Omg read the thread! :D

And yeah, I've played Sonic, but I don't consider it as good as anything on my list :)

What system were the Lost Viking games on?

Snes, PC, Amiga & Mega Drive, it's one of Blizzard's earliest games (I believe back then they were know as Silicon & Synapse.)

The original Prince of Persia possibly deserves a mention (if you class it a platformer) as do those two Disney games from the 90's Aladdin and Lion King (Aladdin being the better of the two).

Wonderboy!!! 2 & 3 were fully awesome.

dbl post, dupid internets

The wonderboys were good, I finished all 6 of them, but they pale beside SoTN and its (inferior) sequels on the GBA and DS. I did go and find Dragon's Curse (wbIII on the TurboGFX) and emu today, actually :)

I've played disney platformers on the megadrive, mostly the mickey and the donald games of various types, and they were hard without providing adequate payoff. I've heard Lion King is good, but I haven't heard of Aladdin. Out of interest, where does Earthworm Jim come in for you?

I think I might try Super Metroid too. Ppl tend to rate it very highly.

Also, FYI, the New Super Mario Bros for the DS spanks. Very SMW but harder, nastier and tighter. Single player is much better than Super Mario Bros Wii, but the Wii does 4 players at once, known as divorce mode, which is great fun in groups :)

What kind of payoff are you looking for? Most games back then were lucky to give you "The End" I really don't consider anything else but gameplay when I rate platformers.

I can't say I find Castlevania as great as you make out (I always found it very dreary, dull looking and repetitive) and your disregard for both the classics sonic and the dissing of Wonderboy make me think you have an anti Sega bias. (I guess console loyalty never dies) ;)

The new SMB DS was good, I actually managed to unlock everything (which is rare for me)

If your a fan of the ninty Castlevanias Metriod will probably be enjoyable for you, Mega Man is another missing series from the list, anyone played the new one?

True, Mega Man is supposed to be good too. I should check those out.

And don't get me wrong, I loved the wonderboys, but SoTN is waaay better. Hundreds and hundreds of weapons and items to collect, more enemy types than you could count, and nowhere near as much bland, repetitive scenery as wonderboy.... None of the previous castlevanias did it for me, they were too bland, but SoTN was gold. And it was PSX, so the graphics and animation were about the best I've seen. I still play it every few years.

I've never been a big fan of 2D platform games, but there are a couple that I absolutely loved. Another World and Flashback. Both on Amiga/Atari ST. Another world was the better of the two in my mind. Very satisfying story.
