Win 95 retail/b/c was essentially dos 7 with a pretty GUI and could run pure dos games with config.sys and autoexec.bat setup to boot to a dos prompt rather than windows. Very occasionally a dos game wouldn't run properly under dos 7, they can be set to run under a prior dos version mode.

All that's needed is CD and mouse dos drivers.

Don't ask me any more about this, it's been way too long since I did any dos boot tweaking. About the only thing I remember is my best base memory results (622k xms and 605k ems).

I've got Dos 6.2.2 disks, which I feel is the best DOS version ever!

Another great alternative is to buy old games from GOG.com. for about $5ea they'll come in patched format, with a working dosbox config set up for you. All you have to do is click the exe. Or if you're like me, play with the config file a little bit, after saving a working backup. Helps the creators still, and there are a few older game i could never get the sound working for by myself
