Default Trying to remember a game

There's a game I used to love back in the early arcade days, back when Galaga and Omega Race were the hot new machines. But I can't for the life of me remember what it was called.

All I remember for sure is the screen was divided into a grid of columns, and you were piloting an arrow-shaped car/ship between them while a number of similar (I think they might have been blue?) vehicles were trying to ram, and later shoot you.

Anyone have any clue what game that was?

Was it a tunnel based game like Tempest? or a vertical/horizontal scroller?

Neither, it was played on a top-down grid, the same way things like Pac-Man or Bomberman was set up. I can't quite recall if the objective was to collect dots or to destroy the other "cars", I just recall I really liked playing it. I do remember it had a single-word title.

Good call with Rally X!

I was thinking it could be Gridrunner?

Here is the C64 version

Ohhh.. how frustrating. I remember this game but can't remember it's name.. I'll delve into my archives and boxes of disks and see if I can find it. ><

Edit: Alright, the game I was thinking of was HeadOn (at least the arcade original was called that, although there were updates and clones with better graphics that I'm no sure shared that name). I'll try and find some of them..

Also, could you be thinking of Crossfire? It meets the criteria as well, but indeed is ships rather than cars?

Or of course, one of those mentioned below..

I think Crossfire is the closest so far. Certainly it had the same sort of setup. Probably close enough for my purposes.

The vehicles didn't look like standard cars, so definitely not Rally X (which I don't think I ever played). Does look fun thought. I think I did play Crossfire on my friend's C-64 (I had a Colour Computer II) along with the endless rounds of Lode Runner.

There are lots of different versions (and clones) of Crossfire, so try Google Images with maybe with 'crossfire' and 'retro' or 'arcade'. Here's an image from the Atari version which looks even closer to your description:

The four blocks in the middle occasionally pop out which you can pick up and give you ammo to shoot back at the aliens with. Crossfire on the C64 (at least the 'official' version) looked like this:

I know I'm a bit late to the party here, but crossfire was the game that first came to mind for me too.

Although that was a clone of an arcade game called Targ

Seems to fit the bill with arrows and whatnot
